Fantasy adventure needs more books like Bones of the Old Ones. Howard’s style has a quiet strength that is a welcome relief to the action movie script writing that is often seen in modern fantasy. His prose is straightforward, reminiscent almost of classic adventure tales by Harold Lamb or Arthur Conan Doyle.

One never has the feeling that Howard is desperate to entertain his audience or to shock them in the effort to prove himself. He is too busy being lost in the story, and in his characters, which are some of the most realistically drawn and portrayed characters you will find in fantasy fiction. Their behavior and reactions are very convincing, and one finds oneself lost in the characters to the point where the
author’s voice becomes invisible. This is a great accomplishment. When action and adventure
are required, Howard (and his heroes) are up to the task. But the quiet moments are
just as fascinating as the loud ones, as it should be. And it is those moments that remind me
of the best travel writing from the early twentieth century and before.

Bones of the Old Ones is adventure fiction, in some ways harkening back to the pulps, but lifts the form up to a literary level. This is the kind of book that the fantasy adventure genre sorely needs. Well-written, full of wonders both earthly and magical, with humorous and poignant moments, and swashbuckling that does not distract the reader with unnecessary descriptions
of brutality and gore in which much fantasy adventure fiction currently flounders.
The dangers are real, the horrors are horrific, but the heroes are just as real,
and one comes away feeling inspired and uplifted with a rousing tale where love,
honor, friendship, courage, and human life have meaning. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed Bones of the Old Ones. It is a fast paced Arabian Nights style fantasy that kept me entertained from start to finish. Ice Monsters, evil wizards, diabolical spirits, wooden soldiers, shape shifters and flying carpets; this book takes all of these and wraps them up in a page turning adventure.

Unlike much current fantasy which trends towards the grim and gritty, the protagonists of this novel are actually heroic. Occasionally it's nice to read a good old fashioned good verses evil tale with heroes who are actually heroic.

Though it is only two books in, this has quickly become one of my favorite series and I eagerly await the next novel.
This sequel to The Desert of Souls doesn't disappoint. It was fun to see Dabir and Asim again. The book kept me up late at night, several in a row, which is the best compliment I can give a book.
I truly enjoyed "A Desert of Souls", and was not disappointed by this book either. Jones' writing is clear and engaging, and I felt like I was part of the Middle East in the 8th or 9th Century. Just enough fantastical elements to make it interesting, without making me think "Oh, that couldn't have happened!" I really hope Jones writes more stories about the two main characters, I would love to read them!
Before I tell you how good the story and characters are you need to be warned. You must read the first book to get the history of the characters. Without doing that you will find that there are significant reasons not to understand what is happening.
The characters are well fleshed out and you can certainly hear them in your mind. The story weaves a wonderful spell and you can easily lose yourself in the world created.
So do yourself a favour and try this series.
It's not fair for sword(/scimitar)-and-sorcery to be this well-written. Jones confidently unveils his story, adding complication after complication to the plot, but always through the characters. The (exceedingly well-researched) setting alone is worth the price of admission, but the cast of characters was also a delight. It was great to run across Herakles and Enkidu (though it begged the question of Gilgamesh's whereabouts.)

No book is perfect. Dabir seemed less omniscient, which was disappointing but probably quite clever. Far worse, in my opinion, was Najya's presence. She didn't feel very developed, and Assim's attraction to her felt forced and plot-movingly convenient. The final act of their relationship, in particular, was a disappointing tacked on bit of fluff that didn't seem to fit the tone of the rest of the book at all.

Quibbles aside, this is a fantastic treasure to be savored.
The Bones of the Old Ones continues the story of Dabir and Asim, a scholar/warrior team who fight monsters in medieval Baghdad. As with the first book, this is rousing sword and sorcery, and Jones weaves in fantastic historical detail. Fight scenes are his strength, and it's a fun read. The writing is sometimes clunky, and the female characters never quite ring true. Lydia, the bad girl sorceress of the tale, sounds too much at times like a modern woman with a chip on her shoulder, rather than a dramatic adversary. Asim's love interest spends too much time channeling her inner ice demon to become a real flesh and blood character. The book was nonetheless one I didn't want to put down, with good pacing and well, great sword fights. Long on monsters and battles and with nothing but a chaste kiss or two, the novel would be fine for teenage readers as well.
