Decades ago, I read a psychology book that included the sentence, "The unexamined life is not worth living." That set me off on an agonizing search for "meaning" in life. Well, I survived that phase, and did gain some insights into what it's all about, but am now well beyond that stage and just trying to stagger through the remainder one day at a time. But I still thoroughly enjoy reading fictional accounts about how others (particularly "young" folks) handle this dilemma. David Payne provides an especially appealing approach to the examined (or unexamined) life. The protagonists - Adam, Jane, Cary - are of course beset by the question: "What is love?" - but the examination goes well beyond that to include other aspects of their lives. Cleath and Morgan, meanwhile, provide the impetus for Adam and Jane to ruminate about their lives in general, and at the same time the author brings both Cleath and Morgan into the self-examination process.

I thought for sure this would be a 5-star book - just my cup of tea, with the focus on characters, their interactions, and how their lives evolve. But it went on and on. Normally I'd be delighted to read indefinitely about such interesting people, but I got antsy toward the end. Also, the book included a couple of irritating physical deterrents: (1) "...and he said," or "...and she said," were run together and repeated time after time, rather than using traditional separations. (2) Adam referred to as "A." "A" in quotes, but without a period would have been fine, but the period tended to upend the smooth flow of the dialog. Also impeding the flow (although not the fault of the author) was the very substantial number of glitches in the Kindle edition. Many of them went beyond simple typos, resulting in words or sentences that didn't make sense. I can't believe that Amazon, with its fanatic attention to detailed customer service, would fail to provide better editing.

This was my first David Payne book. Just happened to stumble on his name from reading other reviews. It will definitely not be my last. He is my type of author, and I'll be reading all his works. Final rating: 4-1/2 stars.

I was transported by this densely-written book (literally, I started it on a 15-hour plane trip).I'm a grandmother now, but I know precisely what those characters' feelings are (were) like, and I can see similar life's experiences testing the second and third generation in my own family. A novel that reveals real life and real people to readers in a universal way is a novel that deserves to be re-read. Trouble is, my daughter took it off me and so it remains on the other side of the world! Highly recommended.
Compelling story of three friends and how their lives intersect to effect and change each other. I will read more David Payne. Reminded me of the descriptions of Pat Conroy. Scenes drip with the emotions of the characters.
I've read the book many times, and it always takes me back to that magical time in a young adult's life when everything seems so wondrous and new while at the same time scary and tragic. For anyone who has an old flame that just won't go out, or who fell in love during a summer on the Carolina coast, "Early from the Dance" is a must read.
This is the second David Payne book that I've read. The first one "Back To Wando Passo" was very good; but this one "Early from the Dance" is even better!

I don't want to give away too much of the plot; but the story has something to do with two things The type A people, who take charge of life, vs. the type B people, who lay back passively and let life take charge of them; and the two kinds of love - loving someone for their personality and dependability, and loving someone just for that sexual spark that you get from them, whether you actually like them or trust them very much.

This novel does a masterful job of exploring these two aspects of human relations. The story doesn't really judge too much; it just lays out the positive and negative aspects of both extremes.
David Payne writes so well on many levels in articulating the tragedy of southern families.He is writing from personal experience. Having grown up in southeastern Virginia and loving the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the 50s,60s and 70s it is easy for me to lose the emotional thread in Payne's powerful an familiar descriptions of his cultural and geographic setting.I enjoyed it as I enjoy his other fine work, despite frequent typos in my version.Please add Ruin Creek to your offerings by Mr. Payne!
David Payne is a gifted writer. He so easily evokes the moods of the Carolina coast, the nuances of family life, the seasonal visitors, and especially the wilds of the marginal area between North Carolina and Virginia coastal communities. After reading David Payne's description of the jungle-like, mossy atmosphere in that area one can understand how the colony of early settlers got "lost" . I loved this book.
I had started to read Barefoot to Avalon, but the writing seemed so familiar it became a distraction. Thinking to myself, David Payne...not sure I've read anything else of his, checked on , and Oh. My God. he wrote THAT book. I read Early from the Dance many years ago, and was deeply and profoundly affected by it, but later on could remember neither the title nor the author's name. I quickly downloaded it again, and was swept back to Killdeer and the Outer Banks with A, Cary, and Jane. I felt a bit differently about the characters, but I think it's just being in a different place myself. By the end of A and Jane's narrations, I could feel my heart pounding. I don't want to give anything away, but if you've ever felt your heart truly ache, or had a moment where your life changed forever, you will feel at home here.
