I purchased "The Grove", "The Tower and "The Guild" all at one time as I was a huge fan of the Sons of Destiny series. Out of the three I enjoied this one the most. Saleria is a strong female character and her interactions with Aradin Teral are wonderful. The mutated creatures found in the grove are unique and well described. I enjoied Nanan, Saleria's housekeeper and several of her interations throughout the book made me laugh.Learning more about Darkhana and their Witches was interesting and the way that Aradin "the Host" and Terel "the Guide" got along, worked together and even looked out for each other was facsinating. Though I thought Saleria dwelled a bit too much on the fact that she was falling in love with two men, even though one of those men is quite dead. Seeing the Dark through Saleria's eyes when she is transported to the Convocation was eerie and made it clear that only the Witches are even faintly comfortable there.
It was great for a fan of the Sons of Destiny to see the viewpoint of one of the attending priests or priestesses of the first Convocation in 200 years. I especially liked Saleria's agast inner "Father Kata?!" thought and the corresponding response of Kata and Jinga to Kelly's mistake in naming them when it came time for Saleria's presentaion to the Gods. (I have to admit that when I first read "The Mage" and saw those words I thought there had been some error in the editing.) This is NOT the case as the error is explained away in this book as Kelly's distraction in her haste to save her "blood bound younger sister Hope".
All in all I would highly recommend this book for anyone who likes the "Sons of Destiny" series as you see more of the characters Jean Johnson developed in those books in this one than in any of the other "Guardians of Destiny" books thus far. Plus you get two great new male characters in one body with Aradin Terel and an interesting female character in Saleria.

Marauding plants and gods joined to help make this a fun and worthy addition to this fantasy romance series. The characters are fully developed and in places rather unique. Have fun delving into this plant/animal infested story.
Absolutely wonderful! Love this series!
The world building is incredible! Can't wait for the next book in this series!
I was enthralled from beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of The Grove and especially enjoyed visiting with a few of the Sons of Destiny! I eagerly look forward to more stories by Jean Johnson!
Great continuation of the The Sons of Destiny series. Actually this one is paralleled by the last Sons of
Destiny book so the first in this series comes before the last Sons Of destiny book. Can't wait for the next in the series.
I need to start with saying that I buy all of Ms. Johnson's books and will continue to do so. This one however, is not her best. Her writing, as usual, was top notch and the story was good; it just seemed to plod along with a lot of description and not much action which was a real let down after The Tower. I loved the characters but they just seemed to be mired in words. It seemed to me that the whole book was there simply to set up the next book, which I will buy, I just hope we move beyond having to explain everything that is happening in their entire world and get more involved in the main characters' lives.
What a delight that a whole interconnected series has emerged, intertwined with the original Sons of Destiny. I enjoyed the first series so much that I bought it in paperback then kindle and read it several times. This series follows another related prophecy from Haupanea that follows the Guardians of the magic Fountains. It would be best to read the original series first in order to get the references throughout this one, but it is readable in its own right.
In this Guardian Series, the Tower is first, then The Grove. The Grove is the sacred bower where the God Jinga and Goddess Kata were married uniting two countries into the Empire of Katan. The guardian of the grove is contacted by a Darkana Witch to represent Katan at the Convocation of the Gods Ceremony to be held in Nightfall. The reasons for this are contained in the Sons of Destiny. The actual events of the Grove are then set against this background.
My sincere thanks to the author for continuing with this series.
